Idaho Tournament

The Diamonds had a tournament this weekend in Boise, and since I can finally hold a camera, but not do much else, I decided to head north with them. The schedule was really tight, with games only a couple hours apart, which ran most of the ladies right into the ground. Especially Kate’s crazy ass who suited up for two teams and ended up playing seven games on Saturday. The Diamonds lost their first game in a shootout after tying 3-3. Then they decided they’d had about enough of that shit and crushed the next two games 7-2 with dominating play. By game four all the ladies were pretty damn tired and started just a little too slow. They ended up losing 3-4 at the end. They played better with each period but were unable to make up the one point deficit from a goal very early in the first.

Every game was really fun to watch and it was definitely worth the trip. Plus, the Zamboni driver let me come into the car-port area and take a few shots. Maybe next time he’ll let me drive.

All of the photos can be seen HERE. A few people asked me about paying for a high rez copy, so I settled on $10 per frame. E-mail me if you want one.

Last Game Of The Season

Today was the last game of the season for Jen’s summer team. That means that she gets one week off before we go to Canada. Then she starts playing again when we get back. I need to figure out a better way to take hockey photos. Looking through a 200mm lens with one eye at glaring ice for three periods will just about burn the eye right out of your head.

Playoffs

Jen’s hockey team had playoffs today, and it was a great game to watch. I’m bummed that they ended up loosing 3-2 in overtime, but I still think it was one of the season’s best games.

Out at the Oval

Another day, another game. I can’t think of anything clever to say right now, so here are the photos…

Summer Ice

It’s really nice to be back in Salt Lake City where warm weather is the standard instead of something to worry about. I’ve just been taking it easy. Watching the Stanley Cup, fixing bikes, slowly unpacking, and going to Jen’s hockey games. Her crew won 2 to 1 tonight out at the Olympic Oval.

Summer Hockey

More hockey for Jen, but with a summer league this time. They play out at the Olympic Oval, which is a pretty cool venue, but which also has netting all the way around it so photographers get to shoot through puck-marked plexiglass. Oh well, hockey is always fun to watch.

Tournament Final

The Black Diamonds ended up getting second place in this weekend’s tournament. Good job ladies.

VIP

With the purchase of a USA Hockey membership (you know, for all the hockey that I play…), I got to sit behind the bench to shoot photos at the first game of this weekend’s tournament. The Black Diamonds tied the Wildfire 3 to 3 in the most physical game I’ve seen from two women’s league teams. Basically, the refs just decided that it was too much work to call penalties, and when each team realized this, things got more and more aggro. Full-on checking, high sticking… I even saw punches thrown on a couple occasions. It made for some good entertainment.

The Quick and the Wise

Today the Black Diamonds played the Lady Grizzlies. Since the Diamonds are about a generation older than the Grizzlies (but still damn fit), it made for an interesting match up. It seems, in this case anyway, that there’s no substitute for experience. Diamonds crushed the Grizzlies 4-1 and I got a little bit better at shooing hockey.

Sick Game

Despite still being very sick (as opposed to sic!), Jen decided that she wanted to play hockey tonight. On my part, I still suck at shooting hockey photos, but I’m starting to get things figured out a bit.
